Rancho Santa Fe is a conglomeration of communities and country clubs and is unincorporated. It has a governing structure and a security force, but they are more like a homeowners association than a government.

Included within Rancho Santa Fe are Fairbanks Ranch and the country club communities of Del Mar and Morgan Run with a third, Horizon, in the planning stage.

The area is prestigious and very wealthy. In 1997, Worth Magazine rated Rancho Santa Fe as the sixth richest community in the country.

Established about 70 years ago, the housing is a mix of old, fairly old and new, with the newer homes in Fairbanks Ranch and Del Mar. The subdivisions are run as homeowner associations with all the codes, covenants and restrictions.
